Transport in France: suspension of road transport of live animals during the hottest hours of the day.

Agriculture and Food Minister Didier Guillaume has decided, under a decree published in late July in the Official Gazette, to suspend the transportation of live animals by road during hot weather in the hottest hours of the day.

In French departments under orange or red alert by Météo-France due to the risk of a heat wave, the transport by road of live terrestrial vertebrates entirely within the national territory (departure and final destinations located in France), in the course of business, is prohibited from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The organization of the transport in question should be based on the latest weather map published the previous day.

This orange-red vigilance is now affecting much of the southern half of the country (excluding the Mediterranean coast), as well as the Center, in the Île-de-France and Burgundy-Franche-Comté regions.

This suspension does not apply to vehicles equipped with temperature control devices (air conditioning, etc.) or for the transport of three or fewer animals. Derogations are also provided for transport necessary for veterinary or animal protection reasons.

For long-haul shipments of more than 8 hours, Didier Guillaume reminds us that only shipments guaranteeing conditions below 30°C are permitted. Controls on compliance with these regulations have been strengthened.

More generally, all pet owners, whether livestock or companion animals, must keep their animals in acceptable climatic conditions and meet the needs of their species. Individuals are reminded to protect their animals from the heat and not to leave them in vehicles in the heat of the day.

Failure to comply with these regulations exposes pet owners, both private and professional, to criminal penalties.
